IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample Question and Answer

The line graph illustrates how much carbon dioxide was emitted per person on average in 4 different European countries from 1967 to 2007.

It is clear, overall, that the CO2 emissions per person in Italy and Portugal saw a marked rise over the period covered. However, the figure for the UK and Sweden fell, although the former country still maintained the highest amount of emissions per person each year.

In 1967, the UK had by far the highest emission rate, at approximately 11 metric tons per person. In stark contrast, the figure for Portugal was nowhere near this figure, having around 10 times less in the same year. By 2007, Portugal’s emissions had increased significantly to just over 5 metric tons, although those of the UK had declined slightly to just under 9 metric tons.

At the beginning of the period, even though the data for Italy and Sweden showed about 4 and 8 metric tons respectively, by 1987, Italy had overtaken Sweden and continued to increase up to (until) 1999, before plateauing at around 7 metric tons per person. However, the figure for Sweden saw a sharp decrease and finished at approximately 5 metric tons per person.
